I can’t tell you how excited we get in the Taylor’s kitchen every year when Alf from Edgecombes drops in the new season Asparagus. As a chef eating and creating menus seasonally and from the region really keeps our passion alive. Grill or blanch quickly, add Parmesan and extra virgin olive oil, black pepper and you’re away!!

My eldest brother Michael and I used to work for Alf Edgecombe before we opened Taylor’s Art and Coffee House and we have fond memories of the family style environment, it’s a delight to visit either for a quick fruit and veg shop or stay and enjoy a glass of wine!

I was so happy to find this butcher when I moved to Bassendean. I love being able to support smaller local retailers who choose quality over profit and these guys are the real deal. My partner started bringing home this outstanding jerky (which we’ve never been able to replicate) and my first question to him was “is this grass fed beef’?” the answer of course was yes and then we found out his pork is free ranging from the South West. Double yay!!

Andreas’ family moved their business out to the Swan Valley 10 years ago and his father has always inspired me with his gorgeous desserts. It’s amazing to see a family business authentically producing this stunning product and committed to using local ingredients, the macadamias are from Baldivis.

We use the awesome Michael Brothers cold pressed juices at our cafe but recently they’ve been experimenting with nut milk, more specifically Tiger nut milk. Now, before you call an international animal protection agency on me, this is actually made from the tuber family (yams etc) which is even better news for folks with a nut allergy. The boys are making this milk (aka horchata) from an ancient recipe from Valencia, Spain and it has a sweet, earthy  and vanilla flavour. Alternative milks are undeniably popular (and necessary) at the moment and fresher is always better so if you’re near the Swan Valley you can visit the Valencia Complex on Benara road, Caversham.

Sylvia and John Rex have a long history in the Swan Valley and grow a huge variety of fruits and vegetables all year round. Their vineyard produces the finest vinocotto around which goes great on sweet and savoury, My favourite is a bacon and goats curd bruschetta on sourdough with dressed roquette and drizzled vinocotto. For another crowd pleaser try my caramelised peach, almond and vinocotto tea cake for an amazing afternoon tea with friends or just on your own! 😉

Bill and Will feel like family to the locals, they’ve been supplying their community with THE best meat, sausages and smoked small goods since before I can remember. When my brother and I opened our café, there was no question as to who would be our meat supplier. My father and granddad were both butchers so black pudding is a strong favourite for me, fried up with a bit of their free-range bacon and egg on buttery toast and you’ve got yourself brekky winner!

The beef mince hits that fine balance of fattiness for flavour but doesn’t leave you with a greasy film in your mouth. Will has such a knack with smoking his meats that it stays really juicy, all you have to do is slice and enjoy, (I’ve always found smoked chicken to be dry so this was a revolution). All the meat is free-range and grass fed, Integrity and authenticity are key here so don’t expect a lot of bells and whistles, just straight up outstanding produce!
